Instead of taunting the priority targets and hoping to CC some of the mobs, you hold aggro on everyone and don't need to use crowd control, which is really good in fights against multiple bosses or CC immune mobs.
If that isn't the content you enjoy then you may like a tormentor tank, you charge ahead of your group, sometimes charging into several packs of mobs before choosing the place where they will swarm you, and your group will not be targeted by any of them! By bunching up all mobs, your group can nuke the swarm you hold. In Conclusion - Tormentor Tanks have been viable for 2-3 patches, but they are not viable in the most difficult content, I've never taken them into a trial, and I struggle (but succeed) in Vet DLC dungeons. There are some other powerful synergies with the stampede abilities - both Unleashed Terror and the Maelstrom two-hander are meant to be single target DoT's that somehow work on the AoE of Stampede, enabling a powerful, flexible, and very easy proc build. you also have access to AoE breach, and abilities that will let you play effectively as a DPS while functioning as a tank. The werewolf pounce ability is another AoE taunt when wearing Tormentor set. On Wardens the "Frozen Gate" teleport skill becomes a taunt with the Tormentor set - which is a really fun ranged taunt. it's flexible.ĭifferent classes bring different things - On Wardens and Necro's I tormentor-tank in 5x medium armor because it's easy to get good resistances from buffs (tormentor helps here) - in medium armor with two-hander and bow you are basically a DPS build that also can tank - my Necro wears 5 briarheart to boost damage, because I get my AoE major breach from Unnerving Boneyard. For a backbar weapon I usually go bow, but sometimes prefer sword and board for some classic tanking, or staffs. There are a lot of different tormentor tank builds - but an easy standard build is 3 pieces of tormentor, and a front bar 2 handed axe - THE STAMPEDE ABILITY IS AN AoE TAUNT THAT ALSO PROCS ENCHANTS ETC! - second gear set active on back bar can be "Powerful Assault" - AS RAZOR CALTORPS IS AoE RESISTANCE DEBUFF - You have an AoE taunt, and AoE breach, and still have 4 gear slots to fill and 8 skill slots to fill. I have played every class as a tormentor tank, pugging dungeons, and have had so much positive feedback - this an AoE tank, you charge in, control ALL the mobs aggro, so your group never get targeted by anyone, and using AoE debuffs to weaken everyone you do what a normal tank might do to a few mobs to almost all mobs!
Tormentor Tanks need to be recognised as a distinct build style - like werewolf builds can be played on any stamina class as near meta DPS, a tormentor tank is an incredibly effective and fun build for any class to tank 4 man dungeons as long as you can cope with being a bit more squishy, you will do a lot more damage, be a lot more aggressive charging in, and enable your group to safely do more damage.
